This referral does not require charity care.
There are 2 types of Barium Swallow: Modified Barium Swallow (MBS)/Video-Esophagram and Esophagram.
Modified Barium Swallow (Video-Esophagram):
- Indications: Oral and pharyngeal dysphagia, Food sticking in the oropharynx, Laryngeal abnormalities, Odynophagia (painful swallow), Cerebrovascular accident, Questionable Aspiration, Recent recurrent pneumonia and right lower lobe infiltrates, Progressive neurologic diseases.
- This study requires patients to go to both Speech Pathology for an initial evaluation and then to Radiology for the procedure. Luckily, both appointments can be completed by the patient on the same day. Must add both to ACT spreadsheet.
- No patient preparation required.
Esophagram:
- Indications: Food sticking below the collarbone, Hiatal Hernia, Zenker's Diverticulum, Possible esophageal strictures, Possible esophageal dysmotility, Questionable perforation, Possible mass, Reflux/laryngoesophageal reflux, Screen for esophageal cancer.
- Requires referral to Radiology alone.
- Patient must be NPO day of procedure.
