The Women’s Health Clinic is an ancillary service of the East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership. The Women’s Health Clinic provides specialized medical and procedural care for female patients of EHHOP’s Medical Clinic. Similar to the EHHOP Medical clinic, patients are seen by a team composed of one Senior Clinician (3rd or 4th year medical student) and one Junior Clinician (1st or 2nd year medical student). The clinic team is overseen by a Mount Sinai Medical Center Attending who specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The clinic is located in the E-Level space in the Klingenstein Pavilion (1176 5th Avenue).
Women are referred to the Women’s Health Clinic from the Medical Clinic for the following:
- Family Planning/Contraception
- Abnormal pap smear
- Colposcopy
- Endometrial biopsy
- Initial pessary placement and maintenance
- Intrauterine Device (IUD) placement and removal
- Post-Menopausal Bleeding
- Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB)*
- Any gynecological conditions beyond the scope of Medical clinic Attending
The initial work-up for AUB (menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, polymenorrhea, premenstrual, intermenstrual) can and should be done in medical clinic. If symptoms persist beyond initial work-up, a referral to the Women’s Health Clinic is warranted. Post-Menopausal bleeding is one type of AUB that should immediately be referred to the Women’s Health Clinic as it requires an endometrial biopsy. There are other exceptions based on the patient’s history, PMHx, and physical exam that should be discussed with the Medical Clinic Teaching Senior to determine if a referral to the Women’s Health Clinic is warranted.
Importantly, Pap smears +HPV, GC/Chlamydia, pelvic exams, bimanual exams, breast exams, pregnancy tests and preliminary contraception counseling should be done in EHHOP Medical Clinic as part of routine primary care.

Note: All procedures (IUDs, implants, colpos, EMBs) require a CONSENT and TIME OUT FORM be completed. These are located in the clinic rooms. Make sure all consent forms are given to the CM to be scanned into the EPIC at the end of the day.
Colposcopy Protocol
Colposcope is on wheels in room KE-53 on the opposite side of clinic from the Physicians’ Work Room. There are other colposcopes, but they are significantly older. All other supplies can be found in the Clean Utility Room. Be sure the clinical teams order "surgical pathology", in addition to the order for the procedure "colposcopy".
Endometrial Biopsy
All supplies for the procedure can be found in the Clean Utility Room. Be sure the clinical team orders “surgical pathology”, in addition to the procedure "biopsy of lining of uterus".
IUD Placement Protocol
One LARC Intake Form each must be filled out for each IUD placed. One copy is given to the CM to be placed in the “To Scan” box.
A second form must be submitted to Dr. Adam Jacobs in Annenberg A2-60 or Sherry Burnside in A2-65 by the Monday after clinic.
Any IUDs not placed must be promptly returned to Dr. Jacobs or Sherry the Monday after clinic. E-Mail Sherry and Dr. Jacobs on Sunday night to determine their availability.
